Let’s face it. Many of us don’t have the time or the opportunity to spend loads of time pursuing a love of birds.  Our lives are crowded with the necessities of survival and the habits of how we live in the current age.  But that doesn’t mean we must abandon our love and appreciation of these beautiful creatures.

Today I want to thank and recommend you to the unbelievable work of one of my favorite photographers, Adam Jones , who keep me in constant reminder and hunger of experiencing the world of birds.

I encountered his work on  Webshots.com   and regularly download his photographs for addition to my screen savers.  He has an amazing eye for color and composition.  And he really must love birds . . .

How do I know he loves birds? Because this kind of photography requires sitting in cold swamp water, or blazing sun, or other really uncomfortable climates until the photographer becomes an unnoticeable piece of the territory. At that point, nature begins to react normally – abandoning it’s own fight or flight syndrome and acting, well, naturally.

In his photographs, no notice is given to the observer.  He must have waited for hours for that gift. But his reward is nature in its relaxed setting.  It is more beautiful than I can say.

So look at these examples or recordings of his gifts.  Please go to his website and buy his pictures.  They are so worth the time and investment . . .

Why the Bird House?

October 18th, 2008 -- Posted in bird house, bird houses, birdhouse | 1 Comment »

Does having and maintaining a bird house have any importance in your world?  Let’s go back a big and examine our assumptions.

In the early 1990s someone did the math on the population explosion and figured that if all the people on earth stood about shoulder to shoulder and front to back, comfortably close but without touching, every man, woman, and child on earth could fit in a space slightly larger than the land area of Fort Lauderdale, Florida.  Even if that math is radically off, certainly the people-space of earth is not larger than one state, say even Texas.

Intellectually we know that this is true. There are VAST areas of earth’s land mass which house no humans at all.

But even if our concept of the population explosion completely erroneous, there are parts of that concept that remain true.  People tend to congregate in areas where there is plentiful water, good growing ground, and hospitable climates.
And so do birds.

As the human population overwhelms these climates, we decimate and overwhelm bird habitat at every corner. And the birds, driven by migratory habit and survival codebooks written, perhaps, into their very DNA, are hard-pressed to accommodate man’s infiltration of their environment. If we want them to survive, we must provide a niche in our personal surroundings for their continued existence. Thus the Bird House.

Birds need the same things that most life requires, clean air, water, food, and shelter.  There are other more specific needs, but those will do to begin with.

So it is our hope that as we find our human comfort zones on earth, we always attempt to make space and a healthy living zone for the birds.

Why not add a bird house to your environment today . . .
